6 Spots to Cast a Line on Pawleys Island

Fishing is fun, no doubt about it. We also know time spent in nature is good for you. So, it’s a win-win to bring your rod and reel on your South Carolina coastal vacation. The creeks, inlets, and ocean make Pawleys Island a fisherman’s paradise. Redfish, speckled trout, flounder, sheepshead, and other good-eating fish are plentiful in local waterways.

Stay in a luxury waterfront property like Sunset Lodge, with a private creek dock steps from the front door. The six-bedroom Seabreeze IV puts guests directly on the creek with a pier for fishing and crabbing.

On Pawleys Island, there are plenty of places to get your line in the water, even if you’re not staying creekside.

1. The North Causeway Bridge is a popular fishing spot, and a prime one for flounder and speckled trout. The bridge is within walking distance from almost anywhere on the island. Or park along the road. Because it’s beside the road, it’s not the best place for children or pets.

2. Huntington Beach State Park is perfect for surf fishing and fishing from the jetties. Bring your gear, including bait (mullet and shrimp are recommended), a durable rod, and a sand spike to set up your rod. Land a redfish, whiting or flounder.

3. Rock jetties along the north side of Pawleys Island is a productive place to troll for flounder. Use artificial lures, mud minnows, or mullet as cut bait.

4. The grass edges along the creeks are excellent for floating corks when the tide is high. Drop your line in the eddies and backflow in the currents. While the tide is out in Pawleys, fish for reds in the creek around oyster beds, in deep holes, and around docks or any other structure that you may find using cut mullet, finger mullet, shrimp, and mud minnows.

5. Use mullet as bait to catch flounder and redfish at the Pritchard Street Landing on Pawleys Island.

6. The public pier at the Murrells Inlet MarshWalk is an excellent spot to cast a line. The pier is open from 5:30 a.m. to midnight. The South Jetty is another prime fishing spot. Expect to reel in trout, flounder, black drum, and redfish.
