Seven Ways to Kick-off Summer on the Hammock Coast

With summer within sight, it’s time to get set for your vacation on the South Carolina coast. As Memorial Day (May 27) marks the unofficial start to the season, it is as good a time as any for a getaway.

A great way to kick off your summer is with the 11th Brookgreen Gardens Memorial Day 5K, which takes place on Sunday, May 26. The race begins at 6 p.m., with a start/finish line at the Lowcountry Zoo entrance. Participants get plenty of SWAG, including a complimentary entry to Brookgreen Gardens at a later date.

The Pawleys Island Memorial Day Summer Kickoff is from 6-9 p.m. on Sunday, May 26 at the Pawleys Island Nature Park. Activities include live music, complete with a dance floor. Bring your chairs and a cooler.

Speaking of live music, it’s another great way to celebrate the start of summer. Various venues in Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet host local bands and singers. The Blues & Americana brunch with Doc Simons hits the stage at noon on Sunday, May 26 at Local Eat Drink Celebrate in Hammock Shops Village.

Of course, beach time is always a fun time. Pawleys Island offers several beach access points, and lifeguards are on watch at Huntington Beach State Park in Murrells Inlet. Splash in the ocean, build a sandcastle, go shelling at low tide, or soak up the sun. Or do it all. Rent your beach chairs and umbrella from one of our partners, VayK Gear or Vacation Equipment Rentals.

Go fishing or crabbing along the jetties or the creek. Be sure to snag a South Carolina fishing license. You can also book an excursion with Harvest Moon Fishing Charters

Tee off at one of the local golf courses. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned golfer, you’ll find your swing at one of the region’s premier courses, including True Blue Golf ClubLitchfield Country ClubCaledonia Golf & Fish ClubHeritage Course, and others.

What’s a vacation without amazing cuisine? Enjoy local seafood, burgers, pizza, and Mexican food. The Hammock Coast has a bit of it all. Frank’s and Chive Blossom are a couple of local favorites.
