Last of Summer Paddling Trips on the Hammock Coast

One of the most adventurous ways to explore Pawleys Island and Murrells Inlet is by kayak. With a network of peaceful creeks and inlets, the Hammock Coast offers serene paddling opportunities.

First, you’ll need a kayak. Get one delivered to your rental with our partners VayKGear or Vacation Equipment Rentals. Both will bring it directly to your vacation property, and pick it up there.

As for where to launch, several shallow landings around Murrell’s Inlet and Pawleys Creek offer easy access. Two sites are located north of the causeway headed into Pawleys Island; one at 3rd Street and another on the last street to the left off Atlantic Avenue.

Morse Park Landing off Highway 17-Bus Route in southern Murrell’s Inlet has a launch accessible at high tide. The Oyster Recycling Road Boat Launch at Huntington Beach State Park puts into a quiet, calm section of the inlet and state park.

If you prefer a guided trip, you are in luck.

Black River Outdoors offers tours at Huntington Beach State Park and Murrells Inlet. Both areas provide a relaxed paddle with an opportunity to see dolphins and local wildlife. Black River also offers fishing kayak expeditions.

Surf the Earth also offers an eco-tour through Hobcaw Barony, an internationally-known conversation center. The tour starts with a beautiful ride through the Hobcaw Barony, continuing with a paddle through one of the healthiest eco-systems on the East Coast.

A few pro tips for newbies: Wear a life jacket. The law requires life jackets for kids under 12, but it is a great idea for anyone on the water. Water shoes are also a must. Creek bottoms can be muddy and contain shells and other objects that cut your feet.

Also, wear sunscreen and stay hydrated. That’s just practical advice for anyone spending time outdoors in the summer.
